Dental Implants FAQ
For qualifying patients, dental implants provide unparalleled tooth replacement. But as an involved surgical procedure, the treatment can often leave patients with many questions: What are dental implants? Are they right for me? How long do they last? How much do they cost? And so on.
At Gulf Coast Periodontics in Victoria, TX, we offer safe implant placement surgery. Dr. Rick Heard is board-certified in periodontology and acts as a diplomat for the American Board of Periodontology. With his advanced training and expertise in the field of periodontist, he can answer all your questions about dental implants. For more information about this advanced procedure, read through our dental implant FAQs.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small post that replaces a tooth root. Typically made from biocompatible titanium, it acts as a base for restorations such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. Together, the post and restoration create an artificial tooth that is as secure and comfortable as your natural teeth.
How Do I Know if Dental Implants are Right for Me?
Almost anyone missing one or more teeth is a candidate for dental implants. Ideal candidates should be in good oral health and have sufficient jawbone tissue to support the posts. Dr. Heard can examine your oral health and recommend treatments to improve your candidacy for implants during a consultation at his office.
Why Choose Implants?
In addition to replacing your teeth, dental implants can also enhance your appearance, improve your ability to eat, and prevent jawbone deterioration. Implants are also long-lasting and, for many patients, can provide a lifetime of benefits. In fact, implants have a long-term success rate of about 95 percent.
What are the Downsides?
As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection and pain. It is also more expensive than other restorative options and requires a longer timeline. However, the advantages of dental implants far outweigh the downsides.
How Much Do They Cost?
The cost of dental implants varies from patient to patient, depending on the number of implants you need, any preliminary procedures, and the final restoration. Based on your treatment plan, we can give you a personalized estimate of how much your implants will cost during your initial consultation.
At Gulf Coast Periodontics, we are committed to providing safe treatments in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Will My Insurance Cover the Cost?
Some insurance plans offer coverage for parts of implant treatment. We will work with your insurance to maximize your coverage.
Are Dental Implants Removable Like Dentures?
Dental implants are fixed solidly to the bone and are not removable. However, some types of implant-supported restorations can be removed.
Will I Need to Replace the Implants?
While you may need to replace your restoration every five to ten years or so, the implant posts themselves can last a lifetime.
What Happens If My Implants Fail?
Implant failure is very uncommon and can generally be avoided by choosing a skilled implant surgeon. However, in the case of failure, Dr. Heard can often remove and replace the affected implant.
Am I Too Old for Implants?
While there is no age limit for dental implants, you do need to be healthy enough to undergo surgery. Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or osteoporosis, can also affect the success of implants. Be sure to discuss your full medical history with Dr. Heard during your initial consultation to make sure that implants are appropriate for you.
